What are the different types of hormone therapy?

  • Bioidentical hormone therapy consists of 17 beta estradiol, progesterone and testosterone

  • Synthetic forms of hormone therapy, such as ethinyl estradiol (estrogen), norethindrone (progestin), medroxyprogesterone acetate (progestin) and methyltestosterone. Progestins are synthetic products that mimic the action of progesterone

  • The standard therapy for years consisted of Premarin (derived from pregnant mares' urine) and medroxyprogesterone acetate. This office does not use medroxyprogesterone acetate due to it numerous side effects and data showing it can cause breast cancer. 

Are there any side effects to hormone replacement therapy?

Fortunately the bio identical hormones used today do not carry the same risks or have the same adverse effects as the hormone therapy of the past. Initially, there is the possibility of some mild breast tenderness. Hormone therapy can typically be administered in such a way that it doesn't cause menstrual bleeding.

Is bio identical hormone therapy covered by insurance?

Yes, there are some bio identical hormone therapy products that are covered by insurance plans. These include estradiol tablets, patches, patches, and gels. There are also progesterone capsules that are covered by insurance plans. Compounded hormone therapy products aren't typically covered.
